II. GRAMMAR:

1. THE DEFINITE FORM OF MASCULINE NOUNS

In the last lesson, we covered the indefinite form of nouns: shok - njė shok / disa (ca) shokė..

Unlike the indefinite forms, the definite form of nouns is used to individualize a person or thing, distinguishing it from a group of similiar persons and things. For example:

Erdhi njė gazetar (indef.). A reporter came (a reporter that is unknown to us).

Erdhi gazetari (def.). The reporter came (a reporter that is known to us).

The definite form is made with the articles i, a etc. that are placed always after the noun and are connected directly to the stem of the noun. For example:

gazetar (m.) - njė gazetar (indef.) - gazetari (def.)

dhomė (f.)- njė dhomė (indef.) - dhoma (def.).

The definite form of masculine nouns is formed by adding the article -i or -u. The article is placed after thee noun and is connected directly to its stem.

Here are some examples with the article - i.

mėsim    njė mėsim        mėsimi (the lesson)

shqiptar            njė shqiptar       shqiptari

mėngjes            njė mėngjes      mėngjesi (the morning)

amerikan          njė amerikan     amerikani

gazetar             njė gazetar        gazetari

The nouns that end in consonants k, g, h or in accented vowels ķ and é are put in the definite form by adding the article -u. For example:

shok                 njė shok                       shoku
